You have probably read all of the rave reviews about “The Amazing Spider-Man” by Sam Raimi. If you haven’t read it, trust me when I say you are missing out on one of the most exciting movies to come out in a very long time. If you have read the book, chances are you will love it as well. Trust me, I can’t wait for you to share your thoughts with others.
“There’s a hole in my heart that no one sees.” This is the last words of Curt Connor, the last man standing between Peter and his greatest challenge, The Green Monster. For those of you that have never been bitten, you owe it to yourself to go see this movie. It is that incredible.
“You reap what you sow.” Curt is absolutely right. Enjoy your vegetable! He is going to give it to you in this movie. There is no other way around it.
“You have powers you never dreamed of.” Yes, there are. One was earned. The other came to you naturally. Enjoy.
“Don’t call it quits. It’s not so much a war. It’s a battle of life and death, a battle of science and philosophy and faith.” What a great quote. I love all these philosophical, scientific and religious quotes in this book.
“I never liked the term ‘religion’ because it implied there is some kind of belief in something outside of me.” I totally agree. I also agree that there is nothing wrong with being spiritual or having a belief in a higher power. But sometimes it is better to just be. It’s more healthy to be honest with myself and to live within myself and not try to impose any beliefs on anyone else.
“If I could only find one thing in life to avoid it would be fear. I hate it when people say to me, ‘Don’t do that.’ They want me to do that. I don’t have to do that. If I can find a way not to do it, then I do it.”
The good lessons in this book are plentiful. You will learn how to set goals, how to get motivated, how to have integrity and how to love yourself and accept yourself for who you are. These are just a few of the many valuable lessons Green explores. If you need a good dose of self-confidence and motivation and inspiration to keep you going and growing, then The 14 Best of John Green will work wonders for you.
In the book he shares stories from his own life and those of other people who are like him. He shares the results of his studies and what he has discovered. Green discusses the importance of spirituality in modern life and why it is under attack from religious zealots who seem to be on a mission to convert all living things to their cause. Religious people are often misunderstood and wrongly accused of being callous. Green gives great insight into the nature of religious faith as well as a logical explanation of its seeming contradictions.
There is a passage in The 14 Best of John Green, where he says, “The real measure of a man’s spiritual maturity is the depth of his understanding. This may not always be apparent in the way a person may choose to view his world. I have known several individuals, including myself, who insist that all of life is a game. Others who are religious devotees insist that their version of paradise is more important than the game they play.” He goes on to explain how different types of games affect our experiences.
Throughout the book he repeatedly uses the word “spiritual”. I found this to be a very wise choice. We often use the term “spirituality” to cover up confusion or our inner being is simply overlooked. It can be easy to fall into this trap and make the mistake of confusing your life with your spiritual life.
John Green is a spiritual person. His book shows us how to balance our physical existence with a spiritual level of existence. If we all went to live in heaven right now, would we actually know what was going on? Most likely not.
Some of the best quotes in the book are, “Love is not a light switch. It’s not a miracle. Love is not an event. Love is not a fragrance. Love is the only event in which we find real joy.”
